Apples from South Africa

South African apples are crisp, juicy fruit suited to fresh eating, salads, baking and juicing, with flavours ranging from sharp and tangy to honey-sweet. They are grown in the orchards of the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape and the Free State, where cold winters and dry summers give good colour and firm texture.
Export runs from January to August, with fruit from controlled-atmosphere storage extending the season. Main varieties include Granny Smith, Royal Gala, Golden Delicious, Pink Lady and Fuji. Apples are graded by size and colour, packed in cartons and shipped under refrigeration.
