Pears from South Africa

Pears are juicy fruit with a smooth, buttery flesh and a sweet, delicate flavour, eaten fresh, poached, baked or served with cheese. South African pears are grown in the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape and the Free State, with the Western Cape valleys producing most of the volume.
Export runs from January to August, supported by cold storage after the summer harvest. Main varieties include Packham's Triumph, Williams Bon Chrétien, Forelle, Abate Fetel and Rosemarie, covering green, blushed and russeted fruit. Pears are graded by size and colour, packed in cartons and shipped in refrigerated containers.
