Blueberries from South Africa

Blueberries are small, firm berries with a sweet, mildly tangy flavour, eaten fresh, with breakfast cereals, in baking and in desserts. South Africa grows them across several provinces, including the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga, which spreads harvests over a long season.
Export runs from June to February, with northern farms starting the season and the Western Cape finishing it. The berries are harvested ripe, sorted for size and firmness, packed in clear punnets inside cartons and pre-cooled. They are shipped in refrigerated containers or by air under a continuous cold chain.
