Cherries from South Africa

Cherries are deep red, glossy stone fruit with a firm, sweet and juicy flesh, enjoyed fresh and much sought after in the festive season. In South Africa they are grown in the cooler, higher areas of the Free State and the Western Cape, where winter chilling allows the trees to fruit.
The export window is very short, covering December and January only. Cherries are hand-picked with their stems, cooled quickly, sorted by size and colour and packed in cartons or punnets. Because the fruit is perishable, it moves under a strict cold chain, often by air freight to the Indian Ocean and the Middle East.
