Persimmons from South Africa

Persimmons, also called kaki or sharon fruit, are bright orange fruit with a smooth skin. The non-astringent types grown for export can be eaten while still firm and crisp, like an apple, or left to soften, when the flesh becomes sweet and jelly-like. They are eaten fresh or used in salads and desserts. South African persimmons are grown in the Western Cape.
The export season is short, from March to June, with the main volumes in April and May. The fruit is harvested by hand, graded by size and colour, packed in cartons, often in single layers, and shipped under refrigeration.
