Avocados from South Africa

Avocados are prized for their smooth, buttery flesh and mild, nutty flavour, used in salads, spreads, sandwiches and a wide range of dishes. South African avocados are grown in the subtropical regions of Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.
The export season opens in February and runs to November, with the main volumes from March to October. Varieties include Hass, Fuerte, Pinkerton, Ryan and Maluma, covering both dark-skinned and green-skinned fruit. Avocados are harvested mature but hard, graded by count, packed in single-layer cartons and shipped in refrigerated containers so that they ripen on arrival.
