Dates from South Africa

Dates are soft, sweet fruit of the date palm, eaten as they are, served with coffee, or used in pastries and cooking. South Africa's dates come from the hot, dry Northern Cape, where irrigated plantations along the Orange River produce mainly large Medjool dates with a rich, caramel-like flavour.
The harvest is available for export from January to April, with the main volumes in January and February. Dates are sorted and graded by size and moisture, then packed in cartons or retail boxes. They are kept and shipped under refrigeration to preserve their texture and colour.
