Kumquats from South Africa

Kumquats are small, oval citrus fruit eaten whole, skin and all: the peel is sweet and aromatic while the flesh is sharp and juicy. They are served fresh, candied, in preserves, in cocktails and as a garnish. In South Africa they are grown in the citrus areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Kumquats are available for export from April to September, with the main volumes from May to August. The fruit is picked by hand, often with a leaf left attached for presentation, sorted for size and colour, packed in punnets or small cartons, and shipped under refrigeration.
