Plums from South Africa

Plums are juicy stone fruit with a smooth skin, in red, purple, black and yellow colours, and a sweet flesh, sometimes with a tart skin. They are eaten fresh, in desserts, tarts and preserves. South African export plums are grown mainly in the Western Cape, with some production in North West.
The season runs from November to April, with successive varieties keeping supplies steady. Varieties include African Rose, Pioneer, Sapphire, Songold and Purple Majesty, among others. Plums are picked firm-ripe, graded by size and colour, packed in cartons and shipped in refrigerated containers, where they keep well.
