Bananas from South Africa

Bananas are a staple fresh fruit with a soft, sweet flesh, eaten on their own or used in desserts, smoothies and baking. In South Africa they are grown in the warm, humid lowlands of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
Bananas are available for export all year round. The main varieties are Williams and Grand Nain, both Cavendish types. The fruit is harvested green, dehanded into clusters, washed and graded, then packed in lined cartons and shipped under temperature control. Ripening can be arranged to order so that the fruit reaches the buyer at the colour required.
