Nectarines from South Africa

Nectarines are smooth-skinned stone fruit, closely related to the peach, with a sweet, aromatic and juicy flesh that may be yellow or white. They are eaten fresh, in fruit salads and in desserts. South African nectarines for export are grown in the Western Cape, whose dry summers suit stone fruit.
The season runs from October to March, with early, mid and late varieties following one another. Varieties include Alpine, Arctic Star, Spring Bright, Fantasia and August Red. The fruit is picked firm-ripe, graded by size and colour, packed in cartons or trays and shipped under a continuous cold chain.
