Pomegranates from South Africa

Pomegranates are round fruit with a tough red skin enclosing hundreds of juicy, ruby-red arils with a sweet-tart flavour. The arils are eaten fresh, sprinkled on salads and desserts, used in Middle Eastern and Indian cooking, or pressed for juice. In South Africa pomegranates are grown in the Western Cape and the Northern Cape.
The export season runs from February to June. Pomegranates are harvested fully coloured, as they do not ripen further after picking. They are sorted by size and skin quality, packed in cartons and shipped under refrigeration; the thick skin gives them a good storage life.
