Prickly pears from South Africa

Prickly pears, or cactus pears, are the fruit of the Opuntia cactus. Beneath a spiny skin lies a sweet, refreshing and juicy flesh, in green, orange, red or purple, with small edible seeds. They are eaten chilled and peeled, or used in juices and desserts. In South Africa they are grown in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.
The export season opens in November and runs to April, with the main volumes from December to February. The fruit is harvested with care, brushed to remove most of the fine spines, sorted by size and colour, packed in cartons and shipped under refrigeration.
