Mandarins from South Africa

Mandarins are easy-peeling citrus fruit with a sweet, aromatic flesh, popular as a snack fruit and in fruit salads and desserts. The group includes satsumas, clementines and later hybrids. In South Africa mandarins are grown in the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.
Export runs from March to October, opening with satsumas and early clementines and closing with late varieties. Main varieties include Satsuma, Clementine, Nadorcott, Tango and Murcott. The fruit is washed, graded by size and colour, waxed where required and packed in cartons, then shipped in refrigerated containers.
