Blackberries from South Africa

Blackberries are glossy, dark berries with a sweet-tart flavour and juicy texture, used fresh, in desserts, pastries, sauces and preserves. South African export blackberries are grown in the Western Cape, mostly under tunnels or netting that protect the fruit.
The season is short, starting in November and ending in February, with the main volumes in December and January. Blackberries are very delicate: they are hand-picked ripe, packed directly into ventilated punnets, placed in cartons and pre-cooled at once. They travel under a strict cold chain, usually by air or in refrigerated containers on short routes.
