Melons from South Africa

Melons are sweet, fragrant fruit with a juicy flesh, served chilled as a starter, in fruit salads or desserts. The range covers orange-fleshed cantaloupe types and pale green honeydew melons. In South Africa, export melons are grown in the warm, sunny areas of Limpopo and the Northern Cape.
The export season opens in November and closes in April, with the main volumes from December to March. Melons are harvested at the right maturity, checked for sugar content and skin condition, graded by size and packed in ventilated cartons. They are shipped in refrigerated containers at temperatures suited to each type.
