Watermelons from South Africa

Watermelons are large fruit with a green, often striped rind and a crisp, sweet and very juicy red flesh. They are served chilled in slices, in fruit salads and in drinks, and are especially popular in hot weather. In South Africa, export watermelons are grown in the warm areas of Limpopo and the Northern Cape.
The season opens in November and closes in April, with the main volumes from December to March. Watermelons are harvested ripe, checked for size and soundness and shipped in bins or cartons, or loaded in bulk. They travel in ventilated or refrigerated containers at moderate temperatures.
