Apricots from South Africa

Apricots are golden, fragrant stone fruit with a sweet flesh and a gentle tang, eaten fresh or used in desserts, jams and savoury dishes. South Africa's export apricots come from the Western Cape, where warm, dry summers ripen the fruit evenly.
The season is short: fruit is available for export from November to February. Varieties include Super Gold, Colorado, Charisma, Imperial (Palsteyn) and Honeycot. Apricots are picked firm-ripe, graded by size, packed in shallow cartons or trays to protect the fruit, and moved quickly under an unbroken cold chain.
