Strawberries from South Africa

Strawberries are bright red, fragrant berries with a sweet, juicy flesh, eaten fresh and used in desserts, pastries, smoothies and preserves. In South Africa they are grown in the Western Cape and in Gauteng, both in open fields and under tunnels.
The export season begins in June and ends in December, with the main volumes from July to November. Strawberries are hand-picked ripe, sorted for size, colour and firmness, and packed in punnets placed in cartons. They are pre-cooled quickly after harvest and shipped under a strict cold chain, by air or in refrigerated containers depending on the destination.
