Passion fruit from South Africa

Passion fruit are round, purple-skinned fruit filled with aromatic, sweet-tart pulp and edible seeds. The pulp is eaten with a spoon or used in juices, desserts, sauces and cocktails. South African passion fruit is grown in the subtropical areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Supplies can be found through much of the year, but the main export season runs from February to July, with smaller volumes in the other months. The fruit is picked or gathered when fully coloured, sorted by size and skin condition, packed in cartons and shipped under refrigeration. A slightly wrinkled skin is normal as the fruit ripens.
