Pineapples from South Africa
Pineapples are tropical fruit with a golden, juicy and aromatic flesh that balances sweetness and acidity. They are eaten fresh, grilled, in fruit salads and desserts, and used in juices and savoury dishes. In South Africa, pineapples are grown along the warm coastal belt of the Eastern Cape and in KwaZulu-Natal.
Pineapples are available for export all year round. They are harvested when mature, since the fruit does not become sweeter after picking, then sorted by size and shell colour, packed upright or in layers in cartons, and shipped in refrigerated containers at temperatures suited to tropical fruit.
