Papayas from South Africa

Papayas are tropical fruit with a smooth skin and a soft, sweet orange flesh around a cavity of dark seeds. They are eaten fresh, often with a squeeze of lime, in fruit salads, smoothies and desserts, while green papaya is used in salads and cooking. In South Africa papayas are grown in the warm lowlands of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
Papayas are available for export all year round. They are harvested when the skin begins to colour, sorted for size and skin quality, individually wrapped or netted, and packed in single layers in cartons. They are shipped under refrigeration and handled with care.
